I was introduced to Barre when I took my first class at Healthworks Back Bay about two years ago. As a former college basketball player, I was used to lifting with heavy weights and doing high-intensity cardio workouts. I was still looking for ways to challenge myself but no longer wanted to increase muscle mass. I had heard words associated with Barre like "long and lean" ... "toned" ... "full-body workout" ... all of which had peaked my interest, so I decided to give it a try!
When I walked into my first class, I couldn't help but feel slightly nervous wondering why all of these women in yoga pants were barefoot! (For real though! To be fair, some wore socks) When I left that day, my entire body felt like jello and I couldn't wait to attend another session. I continued to do Barre throughout my pregnancy and I really feel that a big reason why I bounced back so quickly after delivering London. Staying active and attending as many classes as I could, really kept me strong physically and also mentally.
Fast forward to this past week when I participated in my first barre class in a YEAR back at Healthworks and I'm still singing its praises! I realized how much I truly missed it while working my quads until they felt like they were on FIRE! I left feeling tighter and more toned than when I arrived. The instructor Cristen was super engaged and moved around the room motivating us as we were sweating it out. There were women of all ages and levels participating in the class, so I love that Cristen provided a few modifications for those that needed more or even less of a challenge!
For my ladies that can't make it to class, Shape.com posted an awesome Barre workout you can do from home, and you can find it here. If you're feeling extra motivated, add on some 30-second planks center, right and left.
BYOB. That's right ... Bring Your Baby to Barre ... it's a thing :) More and more studios in the city are starting to offer Barre class for mamas with pre-mobile babies! You can strap them into a baby carrier or bring a blanket to lay them on the floor in front of you, and get your workout in!
